Cranial Therapy

Cranial sacral therapy is a procedure that decreases compression in the bones of the head or sacrum. It also relieves compression in the spinal column. It is a non-invasive procedure that consists of gentle pressure on the back, neck, and head to relieve pain and stress resulting from compression. It is perfect to help in the treatment of a number of health conditions. Our team at Winchester Chiropractic Center is here to help you with this procedure.

Uses & Benefits

Cranial therapy uses a light touch to examine membranes and movement of fluids in and around the central nervous system. This relives tension in the central nervous system and helps to boost the immune system. The best part about cranial sacral therapy is that it can be used on a vast majority of people no matter their age. It can help with soothing pain and releasing physical and emotional stress. It can also help with restoring cranial mobility.

Cranial sacral therapy can help combat the following medical conditions:

  • Constipation
  • Migraines and headaches
  • IBS
  • Scoliosis
  • Insomnia
  • Neck pain
  • Sinus infections
  • TMJ
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Difficult pregnancies
  • Trauma recovery
  • Recurrent ear infections
  • Anxiety

Risks & Side Effects

Mild discomfort is the most common side effect of cranial sacral therapy. This will fade within 24 hours and is only temporary. However, there are certain people who should not have cranial sacral therapy. If you suffer from severe bleeding disorders, diagnosed aneurysms, or have a recent history of traumatic head injuries should not receive cranial sacral therapy.

How is it performed?

When you arrive for your first appointment, you will undergo a series of questions regarding your symptoms and any pre-existing medical conditions you may have. Sessions typically last about an hour. You will be asked to lie your back down on our massage table for the treatment.  Our team will use gentle pressure to hold your head, feet, or sacrum as a way of listening to the subtle rhythms. We will reposition you if needed, so that the cerebrospinal fluids can be normalized. Some people experience a variety of sensations during the procedure including:

  • Falling asleep
  • Pulsating sensations
  • Deep relaxation
  • Pins and needles sensations
  • Hot or cold sensations
